All Church Book Study
Please join us for a one-night discussion of the short but powerful book,The Passions of the Soul, recently published by Rowan Williams. It is a lucid study on how the gospel teaches us to order our emotions (i.e., passions) toward God and others through Christ. Williams makes excellent use of the early church fathers, while also engaging the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5.
Here’s the blurb from the back of the book:
“In Passions of the Soul, Rowan Williams opens up the great classics of Eastern Christian writing to show how it can help us to understand and cope with the ups and downs of modern life.
With compelling and illuminating insight, he shows the cost of living in a culture that is theologically and philosophically undernourished, working with a diminished and trivialized picture of the human self. The Eastern tradition teaches us how to develop our self-knowledge and awareness, so that we can relate to the world without selfish illusions. Only then can we be ready for our eyes to be opened to God, and avoid destructive patterns of behaviour.
Only in this way can we understand the kind of people we need to become.”
We will meet at the church for a one-night discussion of the book’s big ideas, from 7–8:45p. Join us!

Wednesday at the Park
Throughout the summer, we will be gathering at West Park in White Bear Lake to enjoy a time of fellowship and recreation together. Bring a picnic dinner for yourself and your family. We’ll be at the pavilion between 5:30pm–8pm. Come when you are able!
NOTE: In the case of inclement weather, we will not generally cancel the park gathering, but we will leave attendance to your discretion. As you might expect, stormy nights have low to zero attendance, but there is generally a small crew of the faithful on nights with light or spotty rain.
